SERGIO Santos Witkowski admits that a unique opportunity to briefly taste life as a professional golfer is something he’ll never forget.

The 36-year-old, who works as a PE teacher, was among 15 amateur golfers who won the chance to play at the Benross Be Our Tour Pro competition.

Witkowski was put up in a luxury hotel, wined and dined and also played a round with his own caddy at one of the country’s best courses – West Hill.

Two days of glamour was rounded off in true style when Witkowski made the most stylish of exits on board a helicopter – though his once-in –a-lifetime opportunity almost passed him by.

“I didn’t know much about Benross but I tried some of their clubs, loved them and bought them. That meant I ended up at the event,” he said

“I signed up through the warranty and got an email saying I hadn’t make it. But I went back to buy another club a few weeks later and got an email saying I’d won.

“It was lucky I made the second trip or it wouldn’t have worked out for me. I was ecstatic when I found out I’d be going to West Hill.”

The competition was eventually won by Liz Freeman, of Wokingham, but, despite not being able to take top honours in Surrey, Witkowski was far from disappointed.

“I was so nervous because you had to play in front of a lot of people, but that soon gave way to excitement,” he said.

“I only came to have fun and maybe get a hole in one to win a Mercedes. But it was just about enjoying it and it was impossible not to do that.
