London cyclist Alfred Wright insists he heads to the European Youth Olympic Festival full of confidence after victory at the BC National Youth Omnium Championship Finals.

This year has seen Wright continue to demonstrate his talent on two wheels, the highlight coming earlier this month when he topped the podium in the under-16 category of the BC National Youth Omnium Championships.

But the celebrations continued as on Tuesday the 16-year-old was selected to represent Team GB at next week’s European Youth Olympic Festival in Tbilisi.

And having checked out the view from the top step of the podium more than once this year already, Wright admits he will arrive in Georgia with nothing to fear.

“I was amazed when I found out I would be going to the European Youth Olympic Festival and I just can’t wait to get going now,” he said.

“I can’t believe that I will get such a good experience at this age, this is something I thought would happen ten years down the line or something.

“I have never represented Team GB before so it will a great experience to do that and a very proud moment.

“I haven’t really raced internationally before either so this will definitely be the highlight for me. I did race in Holland a couple of years ago but a lot has changed since then.

“So I don’t really know what to expect but I was really pleased with my Omnium victory the other weekend and that has given me loads of confidence moving forward.”

Wright doesn’t have to look far for inspiration these days when it comes to British cycling, with Chris Froome in the Tour De France and Sir Bradley Wiggins having set a new hour record recently.

And the teenager insists his Tbilisi adventure is just the start for him when it comes to Olympic outings.

“I have never represented Great Britain before so I am really excited to see what that is like,” Wright added.

“It is a really big honour and I think it will spur me on to bigger and better things and bring the best out of me.

“I want to ride in a senior Olympics one day so this is just the beginning for me and I can’t wait to get going.”
