Hooker Isaac Miller has already had the experience of wearing the Scotland jersey, but now the Loughborough University man is desperate to take to the Twickenham stage as part of the new BUCS Super Rugby competition.

Having previously been split into north and south leagues, this season sees the best eight rugby universities combined into one competition across an entire season.

Loughborough University kick things off by hosting champions University of Exeter on October 5 and will be hoping to make it all the way to the showpiece at Twickenham on March 26.

And leading them into battle will be forward Miller, who has had the experience of playing for his national side as part of the under-20s setup.

But the 22-year-old is adamant he won’t rest on his laurels now, determined to lead his side to glory in the first-ever BUCS Super Rugby campaign.

“The boys are absolutely buzzing to be in the league. The level of competition is going to be absolutely fantastic this year and we’re just keen to get started,” he said.

“I played with Scotland Under 20s in the Six Nations a couple of years ago which was a really good experience, it’s something I can hopefully bring to the Loughborough guys, but we’ve got a huge amount of experience there.

“To represent Scotland was a dream come true; I loved every minute of it and it’s clearly something I want to be doing more of. But Twickenham is no Murrayfield!

“We’ve been in the final there for the past two years and not managed to win it, so we’re after that, we know it’s going to be tougher than ever but we’re raring to go.”

The new BUCS Super Rugby league sees the eight best university teams compete weekly across the season, allowing students to enjoy a high quality of rugby on a daily basis – a venture supported by the RFU.

And with a high calibre of competition up against them, Miller – about to start a Master’s degree in Management – knows it’s going to be far from straightforward for them to reach the Twickenham showpiece next spring.

He added: “The biggest rivals for us will be Durham, Exeter and Leeds Beckett. There has always been history with Durham so that will be a big game, and Exeter we’ve got in the first game of the season which will certainly be one to look out for.

“With the competition stepping up, it’s going to be hard game every week, but that gives us a chance to develop and the boys are keen to get better and better as players, and if you’re going to do well in the league then you have to do that as a team.

“There’s a chance to impress. We want to be part of those highlight packages, playing at decent venues around the country and that exposure is something we’re buzzing for.

“The level of competition is massive which, in the past, may not quite have been represented at that level.”
